XQuery Editor

XMLSpy® 2008 includes native, schema-aware support for XQuery 1.0 in its XQuery editor, XQuery debugger, and XQuery profiler.

XQuery is an important new language for extracting information from XML documents and databases. Built largely on the robust XPath 2.0 specification, XQuery is predicted to be for XML what SQL is to the relational database. Altova XMLSpy provides powerful support for XQuery and XPath 2.0 in its XQuery editor, XQuery debugger and an XQuery profiler. Support for both standards has been updated to comply with the respective standards released by the W3C on January 23, 2007.

XQuery Editor

XMLSpy® 2008 provides native support for XQuery 1.0 development and execution with its built-in, standards-conformant XQuery engine.

The XQuery editor has built-in knowledge of XQuery syntax and provides you with context-sensitive entry helpers at all times, including a list of variables that is updated dynamically as you edit your XQuery document. Using the XQuery editor in advanced text view provides intelligent editing features such as syntax coloring, automatic code completion, and many other time-saving utilities to help you create and edit XQuery documents quickly and easily.

In addition, support for schema-awareness allows you to harness the full power of XQuery through mechanisms for error isolation, simplified debugging, and enhanced code performance.

XQuery and databases

XMLSpy also provides powerful functionality for developing and executing XQuery against XML-enabled relational databases (current support is for IBM DB2 9 only). In addition to editing, profiling, and debugging standard XQuery, XMLSpy supports IBM's DB2 XQuery extensions:

  • db2-fn:xmlcolumn (retrieves an entire XML column)
  • db2-fn:sqlquery (retrieves values based on a SQL-SELECT statement)

editing xquery in db2 9

When your XQuery is complete, you can execute it directly against DB2 9 and view the results in XMLSpy, or you can deploy it in your own application.

As you’re editing an XQuery document, the powerful XQuery debugger allows you to test and perfect your code, and the XQuery profiler helps you eliminate any processing bottlenecks. Then, you can execute your XQuery against an XML instance document directly within XMLSpy® 2008.
